Adjust Your Measuring Stick
I have a bad habit of using the scale as a measuring stick of my health and fitness success. When I step on the scale and see a number I don’t like, I tend to try to do whatever it takes to see that number go down. The problem is, the scale doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s not an accurate representation of how well I’m doing.
There are other, better ways to check my progress. How my clothes are fitting, seeing definition in my arms for the first time ever, my progress pictures from week to week, the ability to add weight to my workouts. All of these mean I’m on the right track, but if I’m hung up on the number on the scale I won’t be encouraged by the progress I’m actually making.
That made me think, what am I using as a measuring stick that isn’t an accurate representation of my progress in other areas of my life?
How am I limiting my perception of whether or not I’m succeeding by only having one definition of that success? What other markers can I use that may be a better way to measure where I’m at?
For example, if the measuring stick of my relationship with God is that I read my Bible every day, does that mean I’m not growing if I miss a day?
If the measuring stick of my mothering skills is that I never yell at my kids, does that mean I’m a terrible mom if I raise my voice?
If the measuring stick of my home is Khloe Kardashian’s pantry (go Google it if you don’t know what I’m talking about) does that mean I’m failing if my kitchen is a mess?
The obvious answer is No!
What are you using as a measuring stick that may be limiting how well you think you’re doing? Remember that is only one way to define your success and there might be other things that show your real progress.
Evaluate your measuring stick, make the adjustments and be encouraged by how well you are actually doing!
I believe in you! Make it a great week!
