It Gets Easier

Last week I was whining about my workouts changing and having to do what I didn’t want to do. This morning I woke up, went out to my garage and set my mind that I was going to crush the workout. And you know what happened? That’s exactly what I did. I’m not gonna say it was easy. But it was definitely easier!

When you push past the excuses, and the “I don’t want to’s”, you might find that what seemed to be too much, is actually doable for you.

Here are a few things that may help you shift your mindset when you are facing something difficult.

* Before you even start, decide that you can do it. Silence the voices that say it’s too much, too hard, and beyond your capability. Instead, tell yourself that you are strong, you are capable, and that you are well able to overcome.
* Break it off into bite sized pieces. For me, when I see 20 jump squats or some other exercise that I don’t like, that seems like a lot. So I adjust it in my mind and do 2 sets of 10 instead. For some reason 10 is easier for me to wrap my head around. If I have 3 sets of 5 supersets, instead of looking at the whole workout, I treat each set as its own workout. I focus on completing each one individually. Then move to the next one. I don’t know why, but that makes it better in my mind.
* Create a challenge for yourself. For me, I challenge myself to beat the clock. I know how long it took me last time, and I know how long it is theoretically supposed to take. So I push myself to meet that goal. If I see I’m slowing down on one set, I work to make it up on the next one. That may mean I get a shorter rest between sets, or I just pick up the pace. When my focus is on beating the clock, I forget about how hard I think the exercise is!
The thing about hard things is, not only can you do them, but they get easier over time. Stay consistent, keep pushing, and you’ll see. It may not be easy, but it gets easier!
