Maintaining

I’ve mentioned before that I always want to challenge myself with my workouts. I add reps or weight just to do a little bit more than the time before.

Today I was doing lateral bicep curls, and I was barely able to do the same weight and reps from last week. I didn’t push myself to do more. I just maintained where I was at. And that’s ok.

Mentally, I had to adjust a little bit, because sometimes for me, maintaining feels like failing. It’s not! Sometimes you need to maintain where you are at to make sure you’re as strong as you need to be to go to another level.

There is a difference between maintaining and being stagnant. If you’re stagnant you’re stuck where you are at, satisfied to stay the same, not pushing, not growing, just being. There are no gains when you are stagnant, in fact, you’ll probably go backwards.

When you’re maintaining it’s for a reason. You see the next level, and you’re doing what you need to do to get there. You’re strengthening yourself where you are at in order to be prepared to handle what’s coming. Your maintenance has a purpose.

Even if it doesn’t look like you’re making gains in the maintenance you are. You’re becoming stronger, you’re gaining more endurance, you’re getting ready for more.

Where are you at? Are you stagnant? Or are you maintaining?

If you’re in a stagnant place, kick yourself in the butt today, change your focus, and determine that you will start preparing for the next level, whatever that looks like.

If you’re maintaining, keep going, keep growing and know that you are going to be ready for what’s next!
