Rest
In the five months that I’ve been on this health journey I’ve had to do a lot of reprogramming of my head. I’m working to make this my lifestyle. Which means I have had to make some adjustments to not only what I do, but the way I think.
I’ve always told myself in order for something to be effective, I had to exert a lot of energy. I needed to sweat, do lots of cardio, and be worn out. My first three workout plans had a lot of that. Lots of movement, with maybe a minute of rest in between each set. (Except the supersets which were non stop.)
My current workout plan is completely different. Lots of weights, and lots of rest. There are six exercises, and I do four sets of each with 1 minute of rest in between each set. If the entire workout takes me 37 minutes that means I rested for 24 of those 37 minutes. At first this short circuited my head a little bit. That’s twice as much resting than exercising. How could that possibly work?
Exercise breaks down your muscles and depletes them of energy. They need time to recover. If you don’t rest you won’t see the outcome you want to see. Too little rest equals less muscle growth. Too much rest though, equals a waste of your time. You have to find the right amount of rest to see results.
This doesn’t just apply to building muscles. In every area of your life you need to add in times of rest. If you’re like me that’s not easy, but it is necessary.
When you are super busy and stressed as you go about your day, why not take a 60 second pause? Set a timer and force yourself to rest for a minute. When you’re running around taking care of the million things on your to do list, why not, stop, sit in your car for 1 minute and force yourself to slow down?
Let’s try it today! Build in some 60 second rest periods in order to reset. You might find that being intentional to rest may actually increase your productivity!
