Goals Are Not Enough

Goals are not enough.

In one week I leave for family vacation. It’s been on the calendar for six months. I had some fitness goals that I wanted to achieve before we left.

Realistically, although nothing is impossible, it doesn’t look like I’m going to meet those goals.

I’m not being negative. I’m not giving up. But the truth is, even though I had goals, I didn’t do what it took to meet them. My goals were realistic. I could have attained them.

I’ll be honest and say I rested on my laurels, and didn’t put in the work it would take. I looked at how far I’d come, rather than where I was going and let myself become complacent.

I had the goals, but I didn’t have the focus. Goals are great and necessary. You have to set goals for yourself. But you also have to focus on those goals and take constant steps to meet them.

I wasn’t a total schlep. I did part of what it would take, but I didn’t do everything I could. That’s on me and I’ll own it. I’m not gonna get defeatist, and I’m not gonna quit, just because I messed up.

For the next six days, I’m going to go for it with everything I have. I’m not going to readjust my goals. I’m still going to try to meet them! This week I’m going to really focus. I’d rather fall a little short knowing I gave it everything I had, than make it easier and achieve knowing I could have done a little more.

Do you have some goals that lack of focus has kept you from meeting? Get back at it this week! Let’s do this together.

It’s not hard, it just takes effort. Here’s how:
1. Force yourself to focus on your goals every day.
2. Override yourself when you want to do something counterproductive to your goals.
3. Do what you know to do, even when you don’t want to.
I’ll check back in with you next week, but in the meantime, I’m cheering you on. We’re in this together!
