When Comparison Is Good

My husband and I started with our trainer at the same time, about 3 ½ months ago. The other day I looked at him and I’m not gonna lie, I was a little jealous. He looks like a walking advertisement for someone’s workout plan. I immediately thought, “I wish my arms were as defined as his.” “Wow his abs are so much better than mine.” And “I am definitely not as far along as he is.”

Never mind the fact that he has been working out regularly for years so his starting point was different than mine. His workout plan is more difficult and more frequent than mine. And he’s a man so his physical makeup is not the same as mine. But I still felt a little discouraged in that moment.

The problem with comparison is that there is always going to be someone “better” than you. There will always be someone prettier, fitter, smarter, more put together, more organized etc… and when you compare yourself to others you probably won’t measure up.

But comparison can be good. When you compare yourself to you. When I look at pictures of where I started to where I am right now, there is a drastic difference. Instead of being discouraged that I don’t look like someone else, I’m proud of myself for how far I’ve come.

Instead of comparing yourself to others, just look at where you started and recognize how far you’ve come.

Whatever goal you have for yourself, start making changes today to work toward that goal. Next week look at where you started and find a little progress. Only compare yourself to you and celebrate who you are becoming!
