You're Stronger Than You Think You Are

I am out of town today which means I’m working out in a hotel gym. When we travel I always enjoy the challenge of an unfamiliar location. Some gyms have everything I could need, but others force me to be creative and modify things.

At home I have adjustable dumbbells. I can increase the weight by 2.5 pounds instead of 5. Most hotel gyms have standard dumbbells in 5 pound increments.

This morning I had dumbbell shoulder presses on my set list. I started with 15 pounds, then increased to 20. No problem, that’s what I do at home. When it came to the third set I paused. At home my next set would have been 22.5 pounds and I only had 25 pound dumbbells. That 2.5 extra pounds can be a lot believe it or not. Especially mentally.

I didn’t think I could do that weight. I almost talked myself out of trying. But I made myself pick up those 25 dumbbells and do the set. And you know what? I’m stronger than I think I am. I was able to do it with no problem.

Sometimes we set limitations on ourselves, based on what we think we can handle. The reality is we are stronger than we think we are. We think we can only handle so much, but we might be surprised to know that we can actually do just a little bit more.

Where have you limited yourself, based on your own expectation of what you are able to do? Push yourself to go a little further, to do a little more. You’re stronger than you think you are!

You’ve got this! I believe in you!
