Step Backs Aren't Setbacks
I am hard on myself. I always challenge myself to do a little bit better both in working out and in life. I try to do at least one more rep than last time or add more weight than before.
Today I was doing an exercise that had been in my workout plan for a while when I realized something.
I was doing it wrong. My form was off.
So I had to do something that goes against my very nature. I lowered the weight to correct my form.
It irked me to my very core to have to record a number that looked like a set back.
But what’s the point of doing something if you are doing it wrong? There is no benefit in adding weight if your form isn’t right. In fact it’s actually counteractive to your goals.
As much as I hated seeing that lower number, it was necessary to make sure I’m getting maximum results. I had to recognize that it wasn’t a set back. It was a step back to reset, and correct what needed to be corrected, which will ultimately make me stronger. I know once I master my form at the lower weight, I’ll be able to add more.
This made me think, how often do I go through life, adding weight, but my form is off so it’s hurting me rather than helping me?
Do you recognize that pattern in your life?
Maybe sometimes we need to step back, reset, take off some of the weight and make sure what we are doing is actually beneficial for us.
Once we get our form right, we can start adding things back in because we will be able to handle them effectively!
Embrace the Step Back and realize it’s not a Set Back but an opportunity to help you grow!
