If At First You Don't Succeed
A few months ago I had some trouble with one of the exercises in my workout. I tried it a few times without success, and ended up substituting it for something else.
This week I got a new workout plan and saw that particular exercise was on it.
I remembered my first few unsuccessful attempts and my first inclination was to find an alternate movement.
Just as I was getting ready to hit that substitute button, I had another thought. “Just because I couldn’t do them last time doesn’t mean I can’t do them this time. I’m probably stronger now than I was then. Why not just try?”
I made the decision to try and guess what? I had no problem with it this time around. It was actually borderline easy.
Not only did I do the exact exercise my trainer had given me, I also had an opportunity to see how far I’ve come.
This made think how often I might discount my ability in other areas of my life based upon my inability in previous seasons. But just because I might have struggled with something in one season, doesn’t mean I won’t have a greater capacity for it in another season.
Lack of success in one moment doesn’t automatically mean failure in another. So, if at first you don’t succeed, don’t stop trying. You never know when your struggle might become your success!
