Recalculating
I didn’t work out today. I was supposed to. I got up and got ready. I got my water. I went into the garage, and sat down on the bench. But my mental game was just not there.
Usually when I feel like that, I make myself do it anyways. I push through the mental block and force myself to workout. No excuses! Let’s go! Right?
Today I didn’t do that. I evaluated where I was at, carefully considered my mentality and checked my calendar to see what I have going on the next two mornings. Then I recalculated and rescheduled today’s workout for tomorrow, and tomorrow’s for Saturday.
Have you ever missed a turn while using a GPS, and it says “recalculating”? Then it gives you another route to get to your destination. Maybe you could’ve gotten there a little quicker if you’d stayed on the initial course, but if you have time, you don’t mind the few extra minutes it took to recalculate.
Now could I have just overridden my brain today? Sure! I could have, and I’m confident I would have been glad that I did. I’m also confident that I made the right choice today. Today I had the time to recalculate, so I did. Tomorrow I’ll be back stronger and more ready to do what I need to do.
Recalculating isn’t skipping or quitting. It’s simply adjusting the course. I’m still going to get to my destination. I won’t let the week end without doing what I’m supposed to do. I’m just not doing it today.
Next time you have a mental block evaluate where you are at. If you need to push through, do that. If you have the margin, don’t be afraid to recalculate. It just might be exactly what you need!
