When Backwards Isn't Bad
I went backwards today. Which I have told you I absolutely cannot stand! But today I didn’t hate it!
For the past few days I’ve been fighting off sickness. Yesterday there was no way I could’ve worked out. I did make myself get out of bed and move around for a while but I was definitely not the best version of myself.
This morning I decided to give my workout a shot. I’ve felt better, but I’ve also felt worse so figured it couldn’t hurt to try to do something. And maybe I could sweat this junk out of me.
As soon as I started I knew I wasn’t up to hitting this workout as hard as I usually do. So I went backwards. I lowered the weight on some sets. I lowered the reps on others. I took longer breaks in between reps. I switched out a couple of the movements for something I felt more comfortable with. I did what I could, and didn’t push myself beyond what I was capable of today.
If you’re moving you’re winning, so today I won! I wasn’t as strong as I normally am. On paper it didn’t look like my finest moment, but I know better. Even though it may look like I went backwards, today backwards wasn’t bad. Next week when I’m back to feeling 100% percent better, I’ll be back to crushing it again, but for today, backwards was the biggest win of all!
Maybe you’re having a day where you are just not up to performing at your usual capacity. That’s ok. Just do something. Even if you look like you are going backwards, don’t beat yourself up. The fact that you are doing something is a win for you today. You’ll be back to crushing it tomorrow, but in the meantime, backwards isn’t bad!
